Starting at CCJ

Welcome to CCJ!

Here you will find some key information about Christ Church Junior School for your first days here and some information about our transition process from Christ Church Infant School or any other school. If you require any further information about joining us, please don't hesitate to get in touch christchurchjuniors@sgmail.org.uk. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Joining CCJ in Year 4, 5 or 6

If your child joins us at the start of year 4, 5 or 6 or joins us mid-year, we will ensure a smooth transition and enjoyable start to your time at CCJ.

We offer individual tours of the school for you and your child where you will be able to meet key staff members, find out more about the school and ask any questions.

In addition, we offer a taster session where your child will be able to join their prospective class for an afternoon to meet the teacher and their new classmates. It is so important to be sure that the new school you select for your child is right for them and also for your family as you join our community. Once you have made the decision to move your child into CCJ, our headteacher, Mrs Osborne will discuss with you when would be the best time for your child to join us.

On the first days and weeks, we ensure your child has a buddy to help them get to grips with school life and the layout of the building, we check in with them and with you regularly to ensure that all is going well and of course we make sure they have the all important peg, drawer and books!

Year 2 to 3 Transition - Children

We know it can be daunting starting a new school so we ensure that we work with our infant school closely to provide a variety of transition opportunities.

The formal transition process often begins in term 5, where the year 2 children come over to CCJ regularly to find out more about our site, meet our staff and take part in some fun activities. Often the children love our PlayPod, iPads and Forest schools afternoons the most!

Following this we also invite all of our new year 3s to 'Moving Up Day'. This is where all of our children move into their new year groups with their new class teacher. Our year 2 children spend the morning with their new class, go to their first CCJ assembly, meet their buddy* and have lunch with us for the first time.

*During the start of the academic year, our new year 3 pupils then have allocated 'Buddy Time' each week. All of our pupils are allocated a buddy from our year 6 cohort, who will be there to offer support, check in on them during breaktimes and help them if they are lost or stuck. Our buddy system works brilliantly and our year 6s love the responsibility of inducting our new children. Buddy Time may include sharing a book or a piece of work, using the PlayPod or sharing some computer skills in our ICT suite.

Year 2 to 3 Transition - Parents

We also offer opportunities for parents to join us at CCJ and find out a little bit more about us too.

Parents are invited to a tour and welcome session in July each year and then a 'Meet the Teacher' opportunity in September. These are a great way to meet key staff, receive the latest school information and ask any questions.

In term 6, we also start using a part of our weekly newsletter to give information to our new parents as well as letting you know about upcoming Friends of CCJ events that are happening to celebrate the end of the year. Attending these events is another gentle way of getting to know our school and the staff who work here.

It might also help to know that the first parents' evening of the year comes in late September or early October - so it's only a few weeks before the opportunity for a formal conversation and your first CCJ school report!
