Geography
Geography Leader: Emma Thackeray
"The study of geography is about more than just memorizing places on a map. It's about understanding the complexity of our world, appreciating the diversity of cultures that exists across continents. And in the end, it's about using all that knowledge to help bridge divides and bring people together." Barack Obama, former President of the United States
At Christ Church Junior School, we want children to enjoy finding out about the world around them with a focus on studies of the UK, Europe, North and South America. Through their studies of these places, children will extend and develop their knowledge and understanding of the location and characteristics, both physical and human, of places both in their own locality and beyond. They will consider the similarities and differences between locations studied and be introduced to and use specific geographical vocabulary such as: climate zones, biomes, mountains and the water cycle. They will develop an increasing understanding of geography as an academic discipline, understanding and practising the skills and knowledge that geographers use to develop our understanding of our world.
Assessment
At the end of the geography unit, teachers review the children’s completed work and the children complete a short quiz. This is then used by the teacher to indicate which children are working below or above the expected standard for that unit.
